The Luna Debacle

a

The last few weeks have been a disaster. The whole cryptocurrency market saw a bearish trend. But what was more disheartening and disturbing was what I would love to call “The Luna Debacle”.

What is Luna Debacle?

Luna is linked to Terra USD or popularly known as UST, an algorithmic stablecoin of the Terra ecosystem. Terra was pegged against the US Dollar, and it aimed to maintain its peg through a network of arbitrageurs who would buy and sell Terra’s volatile currency Luna. Luna, a governance token, gives voting power over the governance to the holders.

The whole mechanism of Terra works on minting and burning Terra UST and Terra Luna. If Terra UST loses its peg against the dollar, Terra Luna would be burnt and vice-versa. It certainly attracted attention and huge investment, but no one saw what was yet to come.

There was a tremendous amount of anxiety among Terra holders as millions of dollars were at stake. Even big exchanges like Binance and CoinDcx delisted it. Whether it was a Ponzi scheme isn’t easy to tell. However, macroeconomic factors like inflation and the federal bank’s interest rate increase might have led to its fall.

Even though Cryptocurrency is a highly volatile market and something happening like this is nothing new. Many coins would come and go like this. However, such debacles are sure to blot the whole market. People have lost their hard-earned money, and this nightmare will stay fresh in people’s minds.

What Really Happened To LUNA Crypto?

In the end, I have realized that one shouldn’t be in haste when it comes to investments. I have burnt my fingers well enough to understand the importance of not giving in to the urge to buy something that looks shiny on the outside.

I wish I had done more research before buying Terra Luna. As of now, Do Kwon, Terra’s founder, plans on bringing in the new decentralized stablecoins, and I highly doubt that the masses will accept it at large like the previous one.

A market plays on many factors, but human emotions are important. Once such a fiasco happens, it becomes too difficult for people to start their trust again.
